In 2008, Cheng Shouchun joined Hong Kong Electric as part of the production line and was later transferred to serve as an elevator operator in the workshop, responsible for ensuring daily smooth operation of the elevators. Initially lacking comprehensive knowledge of elevator operations, the company funded his training at municipal institutions. Through systematic study, he successfully obtained the Elevator Management Level A certification, acquiring essential elevator knowledge and emergency rescue skills. Today, Engineer Cheng has become a "living dictionary" of elevator maintenance, thoroughly understanding their structural principles. When faults occur, he can instantly identify issues by examining the internal components and devise solutions. He emphasizes that stable elevator operation is crucial for efficient production. Consequently, Cheng frequently monitors elevator entrances with heavy foot traffic to maintain order and strictly prohibits overload. During repairs, he ensures minor issues are resolved within five minutes to avoid disrupting material transportation. For problems beyond his expertise, he promptly coordinates with maintenance companies, overseeing the entire process and urging immediate repairs until full operational recovery.

Both inside and outside the elevator, there are safety-related signs including passenger precautions and contact numbers for management personnel.

Throughout his over ten-year career, Engineer Cheng has handled several emergency rescue operations involving trapped individuals. One incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when a night-shift supervisor was trapped in an elevator after a sudden power outage. Upon seeing Cheng Shouchun's contact number posted inside the elevator, the supervisor immediately contacted him for assistance. At the time, Cheng was resting in his dormitory. Without hesitation, he got up, dressed, and rushed to the elevator control room. Leveraging his extensive experience and steady emergency response skills, he swiftly diagnosed the malfunction, skillfully operated the equipment, and safely lowered the elevator, rescuing his colleague. The entire process—from receiving the call to ensuring the trapped person's safety—took less than five minutes. Recalling the incident, Engineer Cheng stated, "Ensuring personal safety is paramount. My sole focus was to rescue the person promptly. Whether during daytime or nighttime, I always respond immediately to any elevator-related emergencies—this is my professional duty." With his rigorous and pragmatic work ethic, Engineer Cheng has established a robust safety safeguard for employees' lives and the smooth operation of production processes.

In addition to ensuring the proper operation of all 14 elevators within the factory, Cheng Shouchun also proactively handles various logistical tasks in the workshop. Every morning, he is always the first to arrive at his post: turning on the water dispenser, thoroughly cleaning the elevators to ensure they remain spotless, and completing all pre-shift preparations. Each day after work, he stays until the last moment to check that the water, electricity, and windows on the nine floors across the two workshop buildings are properly closed, identifying and addressing any potential hazards before leaving. Cheng stated that whenever assistance is needed in the workshop, he volunteers his help whenever possible, contributing his expertise. Both his consistent early arrivals and late departures, as well as his selfless dedication regardless of assigned duties, stem from his unwavering high standards over the past eighteen years and the meticulous attention to detail and strong sense of responsibility ingrained in his daily routine.

In Cheng Shouchun's view, a qualified elevator operator must not only possess excellent technical skills but also demonstrate quick thinking and rapid response capabilities. Most importantly, they must exhibit a strong sense of responsibility and patience toward their work. In an ordinary position, no task is trivial; even the smallest details carry significant responsibility. Each seemingly simple task constitutes an indispensable component of the company's stable and orderly production operations.
